Podoboo, also known as Jumping Fireball or Vertical Fireball in Lunar Magic, is a ball of fire that leaps up out of pools of lava in Mario games.

[edit] General Information

Podoboos first appeared in Super Mario Bros.' castles, and they went on to appear in Super Mario Bros. 3's fortresses and Super Mario World's castles. They jump in and out of lava at varying heights with no regard to Mario's presence. In Super Mario World, Mario can spin jump off of them, but timing things right to do so is tricky.

They also have a reflecting counterpart which diagonally bounces off of roofs, walls and floors and won't stop for anyone. Two such Podoboos appear in the boss fights of both Lemmy and Wendy Koopa.

[edit] Hacking Information

Jumping Podoboos require sprite buoyancy to be turned on in any level they appear in, otherwise they'll freeze the game. Podoboo's graphics are stored in a different way than all other enemy sprites. Instead of being stored with the rest of the sprite graphics, they are stored with Yoshi's graphics in GFX33. Because of this, their appearance cannot be changed with ExGFX. Also, if they appear in the same area as Yoshi, Yoshi's head will glitch up and turn into a Podoboo whenever they are onscreen.

The reflecting fireballs have no such restriction and can be used in any level that uses castle sprites. (GFX03)
