Message Box

Message boxes are sprites found in Super Mario World and many hacks.

Message Boxes are sprites, even though they appear to be blocks. Putting a Message Box too close to a Goal Point will cause it to turn into a coin as soon as the player hits the tape. Message Boxes can hold up to 144 characters of text and are usually used in hacks to tell the player what to do or give a hint.

Lunar Magic allows Message Box messages to be edited in the Overworld Editor. Each level can hold two messages, and the X position the Message Boxes are at specify which message they use. This means it is possible to place multiple Message Boxes that have the same text.

Some hacks and patches override this limitation.
