Super Demo World: The Legend Continues (DW:TLC) is a full hack of Super Mario World that was created by FuSoYa and Zero-G. It was an expansion on Demo World, which had only a few levels and no changes to the overworld. DW:TLC, however, hacked SMW to its fullest extent, and is a "demonstration" of what Lunar Magic can do.

[edit] Levels

Super Demo World: The Legend Continues contains 10 worlds, 84 levels and 120 exits. Since this hack is a "demonstration", the levels can vary wildly, with several different themes present in the game, many of which were nonexistent in the original SMW.

[edit] Overworld

The game's overworld consists of a few continents in an ocean and submaps with different themes. The vast majority of levels in this game, with the exception of the castles at the end of each world, are "normal" levels-Ghost Houses, Fortresses, and other "non-normal" levels are almost absent from the game, with rather few exceptions. It featured new world themes, such as an ice themed world and Big Boo World.

[edit] Graphics

SDW: TLC contains many original SMW graphics, but, keeping with the "demonstration" theme, also includes many graphics from other SNES games, giving the player an idea of what can be ported to SMW. Levels with original SMW graphics and those with graphics imported from other games can often be found mixed into a single world, causing some to criticize the style clashes this creates.

[edit] Technical

FuSoYa coded this game's custom blocks himself and inserted them from scratch. Several of these blocks are now available in BlockTool, such as the Goomba Blocks that Mario can't pass through but enemies can. He also created an igloo level where Mario's fireballs froze, so instead of melting the custom ice block and revealing coins, the "Iceballs" froze coins and munchers. Among others, there were also SMB3-style scrolling pipes.

[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Mario's breakfast eggs were stolen by Bowser one day, and now Mario must journey to recover the stolen eggs before they hatch.

After Mario defeated Bowser, he discovered that The Big Boo had made a new hideout for himself and the Boos, so he journeyed through the Star World and found the hidden portal, which he used to find the Big Boo World. He defeated the Big Boo and found his secret treasure hoard, including a fireball power-up.

Spoilers end here.

[edit] Reception

"Pipe World 2" is quite frustrating to some.
"Pipe World 2" is quite frustrating to some.
SDW: TLC has been generally well received in the SMW hacking community, but a few have remarked that others let the fact that FuSoYa made it mess with their judgment. A few have complained about its level design, and several have complaints against its "trial-and-error" levels, especially the infamous Pipe World 2, which involves randomly guessing the correct pipes to proceed. As stated above, the wide range of imported graphics cause stylistic clashes. Still, SDW: TLC remains a favorite of SMW hacks, despite its flaws.

[edit] Trivia

By using the message block in the Water Mushroom House in other levels, you can see tips, fun facts, and sometimes it will tell you how to find the exit or secret exit. By using the item message block, you can see the following information:

  • The goomba blocks were originally green, but FuSoYa didn't like the color and changed them to blue.
  • The color of the shells in the gray question blocks correspond with the color switch palace in each world
  • The Santa Hats in Ice World were Zero-G's idea. It uses the small "forbidden" tile that can mess up points
  • In Sky World 5, Zero-G had a high fatality rate while play testing because he ignored FuSoYa's advice to stay to the left of the screen instead of the right
  • In Pipe World 1, it is revealed how to do the multiple 1-up trick seen on the title screen.
  • Even though Zero-G made Bowser World 1, he criticizes it on being too easy
  • All of the Crystal Caverns levels (except for Crystal Cavern 1, Vacant Ghost House, and #4 Crystal Castle) discuss the possibility of a feature in Lunar Magic to edit Super Mario Advance 2, the Game Boy Advance version of Super Mario World. However, those particular levels with the exception of Crystal Secret require the emulator to disable HDMA emulation, Layers 1 and 2, and sprites in order for the messages to be read properly.
